SIU reviews 25 complaints in last four months

Manama, Jan. 8 (BNA): The head of the Special Investigation Unit and the acting attorney general said that the unit had received 25 complaints of ill-treatment by members of the Public Security over the past four months.

The unit has initiated complaints investigation procedures.

He said that the unit listened to the statements of 33 witnesses, interrogated 22 accused, suspected public security officers, and referred eight of the complainants to the Department of Forensic Medicine and Psychological Support.

The acting attorney general indicated that the investigations were about an alleged incident where three inmates were physically assaulted by four officers, and he ordered that the accused be referred to the Supreme Criminal Court.

The unit ordered the accused officer to be transferred to the Minor Criminal Court for mistreating an inmate. The case is under review by the court.
