Penalty save denies City victory, keeps EPL title race alive

London, May 15 / BNA: A dramatic penalty kick that almost kept the English Premier League title race going, according to the Associated Press.

When Riyad Mahrez stepped up to score a penalty in the 86th minute for Manchester City, he knew converting it would effectively secure another league championship for his team.

But they were saved by West Ham goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski and City were forced to a 2-2 draw at the Olympic Stadium on Sunday – albeit from 2-0 down at the end of the first half – to keep Liverpool still hopeful.

City are now four points ahead of Liverpool, who travel to Southampton on Tuesday and need at least a point to take the title race into the final on Sunday.

Perhaps a win is required at Southampton, although City have a superior goal difference of 7 compared to Liverpool.

And City ended at home against Aston Villa, led by Liverpool star Steven Gerrard, who had never been able to win the league with Liverpool. He still can – but as a coach.

Liverpool hosts Wolverhampton in its last match. City coach Pep Guardiola was not late when Fabianski jumped to his left and took a penalty from Mahrez.

A few seconds later, Guardiola scratched the side of his head and rubbed his face, not appearing too disappointed at the final whistle as he shared a embrace with Mark Noble – the long-running West Ham midfielder who retired at the end of the season. The season was his last appearance at home with the club.
