Swiatek retains Italian Open title with 28th straight win

Rome, May 15 / BNA / World number one Iga Swiatek retained her title in the Italian Open after defeating Anas Jaber 6-2 6-2 in Rome on Sunday, achieving her fifth consecutive WTA title and winning her twenty-eighth match against straight.

Having swept the titles in Doha, Indian Wells and Miami, Swiatek has now won every WTA 1000 she’s been in this season and will be a favorite to add to her success at the 2020 French Open when the Grand Slam kicks off next week.

Swatek overtook Jabeur to end Tunisia’s 11-game winning streak, which began in her winning streak in Madrid, to tie the head-to-head record 2-2 after losing in her 2021 matches at Wimbledon and Cincinnati.

In the pair’s first encounter on clay, Swiatek was barely annoyed by world number seven Jaber in the opening stages of the match and continued to serve comfortably for the race to advance 3-0.

Jabeur tested her 20-year-old opponent at 4-2 but Swiatek pulled off the 0-30 hole to grab from the devil and take the match before wrapping up the set on the second set point when the Tunisian hit a forehand into the net. Clear.

The second set started in a similar fashion, with Jabeur winning the next two games and looking ready for another match, but Swiatek maintained her 0-40 delay, saved four stops and sealed off the match on her first serve before a backhand into the net from the Tunisian ended her resistance.
