Ombudswoman expresses pride in Bahrain’s human rights achievements

Manama, July 14 (BNA): Ombudsperson and Chairperson of the Commission for the Rights of Prisoners and Detainees, Ghada Hamid Habib, praised the 2022 Human Rights and Democracy Report issued by the British Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO).

The report, which removed Bahrain from the list of priority countries in the field of human rights, included positive indicators about the human rights situation in the Kingdom.

In this regard, the report indicated that up to 1,470 inmates have benefited from alternative sentences legislation, adding that all prisoners can benefit from non-custodial sentences, regardless of the time they have served.

The Ombudsperson emphasized that Bahrain is proving itself as a pioneering Arab and regional model for pushing forward towards promoting human rights in all its forms, within the comprehensive development vision, led by His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, and with the support of His Royal Highness. His Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister.

She affirmed that the royal vision for human rights is systematic, comprehensive and integrated, as it is based on procedures, laws and executive institutional work, citing the establishment of the Board of Grievances and the Commission for the Rights of Prisoners and Detainees, whose reports and recommendations have been prepared. It contributed to improving the conditions of prisoners and detainees, culminating in the launch of world-class programs and projects, including the Open Prisons Program.

Habib affirmed that Bahrain has every right to be proud of its steps in the field of human rights, adding that the Kingdom’s successes are an incentive to achieve more achievements in this field.
