Seattle, July 12 (BNA): The National League shone in the Emerald City, ending a losing streak that had lasted more than a decade.
The big hit was launched by an unknown catcher from Colorado, the Associated Press (AP).
Elias Diaz hit a two-run homer off Felix Bautista in the eighth inning, and the NL ended a nine-game losing streak in the All-Star Game with a 3-2 victory over the American League on Tuesday night.
The NL won for the first time since its 8-0 win in 2012 in Kansas City, and Diaz became the first Rockies player to win an All-Star MVP award.
Diaz drove a 2-2 ball off Baltimore’s hard throwing closer to left to put the NL ahead. Diaz was Colorado’s only representative to make his All-Star Game debut.
Diaz has nine guards this season but hasn’t hit a long ball since June 23 against the Los Angeles Angels.
For most of the night, the All-Star Game was a duel of pitchers highlighted by a few great hits and some stellar defense.
It got tense for the NL with Philadelphia closer Craig Kimbrel on the mound in the ninth.
Wonder Franco volleyed to the caution lane, and Kimbrel issued two walks to Kyle Tucker and Seattle star Julio Rodriguez.
The 22-year-old Rodriguez was in a position to lock it in for his home crowd.
Kimbrel recovered to hit Jose Ramirez to finish him off. Kimbrel has also been involved in previous NL wins, recording two wins in 2012.
Yandy Diaz hit a leadoff single in the second inning and a Bo Bechet sacrifice fly in the sixth gave the AL a 2-1 lead.
J.D. Martinez doubled and scored on Luis Aries’ single in the fourth against George Kirby of Seattle, tying it at 1.
It seemed that Lourdes Gurriel Jr. May tied the game again in the seventh when his left line shot was originally ruled a homer but was overturned as a foul ball on the replay.
The All-Star Game returned to Seattle for the first time since 2001 when the Mariners were in the midst of their magical 116-win season, Cal Ripken Jr. bid farewell to the All-Star stage and Tommy Lasorda had a fumble.
Gerrit Cole became the first New York Yankees player to start an All-Star game since Roger Clemens in that game in 2001. He needed a pair of stunning jumps from Adolis García and Randy Arozarena near the wall to escape the first inning unscathed.
The show was the story of the night. Only nine balls have been hit over 100 miles per hour. There were 20 strikeouts combined, including Camilo Duvall silencing the crowd with a hit by Rodriguez in the seventh inning when four of the five pitches exceeded 100 mph.
AL manager Dusty Baker said, “You could tell, guys, we wanted to win. They wanted to win.” “There was a lot of pride and a lot of competitiveness there. You could tell by the energy on both sides and the energy on the field.”
Ohtani Chant
The All-Star game was missing some big names with Mike Trout and Aaron Judge out with injuries, but Shuhei Ohtani was still around.
The Angels star drew the biggest cheers outside of the three Seattle representatives during the prelims, and was rich with “Come on Seattle” cheers when he was on the plate. The crowd was apparently aware of his pending free agency this offseason.

Toronto goaltender Jordan Romano left in the seventh after throwing a pitch that Juriel fouled and the ruling was originally fair. He threw five pitches before leaving the game with back tightness.
Chicago White Sox outfielder Luis Robert Jr. did not play. After experiencing tightness in his right calf during the Home Run Derby. The White Sox said Robert had an MRI in Seattle and is listed as daily.

The post-All-Star break portion of the schedule begins Friday, and every team in the league is scheduled to start.
San Diego’s game at Philadelphia is the first game scheduled for Friday. The second half begins with Atlanta having the best record in baseball at 60-29, and an 8-game lead in the NL East. Tampa Bay has the best record in the American League at 58-35, two games better than Baltimore.
