Late goal earns Man U 1-0 win over West Ham, 4th place in PL

London, January 22 (BNA): Marcus Rashford scored in the third and final minute of stoppage time to give Manchester United a 1-0 victory over West Ham, lifting the team above its rival to fourth place in the English Premier League on Saturday.

Rashford, as a second-half substitute, made a cross from fellow substitute Edinson Cavani in one of the few obvious chances created in a lackluster game at Old Trafford, according to the Associated Press.

The move also included a third substitute, Anthony Martial, with coach Ralph Rangnick making the bold decision to end the match with four strikers.

“They are all involved,” Rangnick said. “That makes it more important.”

It ended a good week for United, who also beat Brentford 3-1 on Wednesday, with the league approaching a two-week winter break.

For Rashford, too, with the England striker scoring in back-to-back league games for the first time in a season on hold due to injury and poor form.

Cristiano Ronaldo, who initially overcame a problem with his neck, went through the entire match this time but didn’t come close to scoring.

The Portuguese striker was disgusted by his substitution midway through the second half of the match at Brentford and made his feelings known to coach Ralf Rangnick.

There were only four shots on target in the entire match, and only one came from West Ham.

“To be naive like that, to shoot in the last 20 seconds is devastating,” said Declan Rice, who was a boss in the West Ham midfield.

“When they were pushing the players forward, we are a rebounding offensive team that still had the energy to go forward. It was a real kick in the teeth to concede that of late.”
