Vaccine passport protests in Europe draw thousands of people

Helsinki Jan. 22 (BNA): Thousands of people gathered in European capitals on Saturday to protest against vaccine passports and other requirements imposed by governments in the hope of ending the coronavirus pandemic.

Demonstrations took place in Athens, Helsinki, London, Paris and Stockholm, according to the Associated Press.

Rallies in Paris attracted hundreds of protesters protesting the introduction of the new COVID-19 ticket starting Monday.

It will severely restrict the lives of those who refuse to be vaccinated by preventing them from domestic flights, sporting events, cinemas and other places of entertainment.

French media reported that demonstrators took part in a march by the hundreds in other cities.

In Sweden, where vaccination certificates are required to attend indoor events with more than 50 people, about 3,000 protesters walked through central Stockholm and gathered in a main square.

A similar demonstration with around 1,000 participants was also held in Gothenburg, Sweden’s second largest city.

The Finnish government allowed local and regional authorities just before Christmas to introduce “comprehensive and complete measures” in response to the growing virus cases involving the omicron variant.

The restrictions included restricting or banning events, moving college classes online, limiting restaurant service and closing places where people are most at risk of exposure. Restaurants and events are allowed to request vaccine passports.

Police said about 4,000 people marched on the streets of central Helsinki on Saturday to protest. The demonstration was organized by a group called “International Demonstration”.
