London, Jan. 22 (BNA): Newcastle claimed their second Premier League win of the season with a 1-0 victory over Leeds on Saturday in a major boost to their ambitions to avoid relegation.
Jonjo Shelvey’s low free kick went through a set of outstretched legs in the area and pressed into the far corner of the net in the 75th minute on Elland Road, according to the Associated Press.
The win wasn’t enough to push Newcastle out of the relegation zone, but they are just one point away from safety with a game in hand over fourth-to-last Norwich, who beat Watford on Friday.
Eddie Howe’s side were under pressure for long periods against Leeds, who were chasing a third straight win to advance over the bottom three. Marcelo Bielsa’s side are now looking back after being penalized for failing to capitalize on their dominance.
