Gas explosion in sewer kills 12 in Pakistan’s largest city

A powerful gas explosion in the sewage system in Pakistan’s largest city, Karachi, killed at least 12 people and injured 11 others on Saturday, police and a health official said.

Police spokesman Sohail Jokhio said the explosion appeared to have been caused when something ignited the gas that had accumulated in the sewage under a local bank building in the coastal city’s Shershah district.

The powerful explosion destroyed the HBL Bank building. Video footage broadcast by local TV stations showed the entire Shershah branch building was damaged, according to the Associated Press.

Dr. Saber Memon at the Injury Center in Karachi said 10 people were killed and 13 injured, at least three of whom are in serious condition. He explained that many of the wounded were sent to the intensive care unit.

Police officer Sarvar Nawaz Sheikh later said that two of the injured died in hospital, bringing the death toll to 12.
