London, December 18 (BNA): The English Premier League lost another match to the Covid-19 outbreak in its squad when Aston Villa’s home match against Burnley was postponed two hours before kick-off on Saturday.
Villa said he does not have enough players to make a squad after more positive tests in his squad were reported early Saturday. The league agreed to Villa’s request to postpone the match “based on the number of coronavirus cases, injuries and disease.”
Five matches scheduled for this weekend have already been canceled due to the coronavirus outbreak in teams amid a worsening health emergency in Britain with the spread of the omicron variant, according to the Associated Press.
The league said the remaining four matches – Leeds – Arsenal on Saturday, Newcastle – Manchester City, Wolverhampton – Chelsea and Tottenham – Liverpool on Sunday – “are currently scheduled to go ahead as planned”.
The total number of Premier League matches postponed over the past week has reached 10. Only six matches have been canceled for the entirety of last season due to the coronavirus.
The Burnley game has now been postponed on match day for the past four days. His home match against Watford was also called off a few hours before kick-off on Wednesday.
Premier League managers will meet on Monday to discuss the COVID-19 situation, with some coaches – such as Thomas Frank of Brentford – calling for play to stop, citing justice, and others saying matches must go on.
