Assam is on red alert and preparing for more heavy rains this weekend by evacuating people in low-lying areas, according to the Associated Press.
The state’s disaster management agency said in a statement that nearly 14,000 people are currently living in 83 relief camps run by the Assam government in 20 out of the state’s 31 districts. Overall, nearly 500,000 people have been affected by monsoon floods in the state.
The Brahmaputra River, one of the largest rivers in Asia, floods annually. It flows 1,280 kilometers (800 mi) through Assam before passing through Bangladesh, which shares a 260 kilometers (160 mi) border with Assam.
