London, March 6 (BUS): Kevin De Bruyne and Riyad Mahrez scored twice to allow Manchester City to beat Manchester United for the second time this season, winning the derby 4-1 on Sunday.
For City, their six-point lead at the top of the Premier League over Liverpool was restored. For United, fourth place in the Champions League has been abandoned for the time being after Arsenal’s 3-2 win over Watford, according to The Associated Press.
It took City just five minutes before taking the lead, as Bernardo Silva parried De Bruyne’s response to kick off the legs of United captain Harry Maguire and goalkeeper David de Gea.
United equalized with a superb counter-attack in the 22nd minute completed by Jadon Sancho. Paul Pogba sprayed a fine shot to put the 21-year-old Sancho down the left. The City academy graduate had a lot to do as he took on Kyle Walker, but he got past right-back and Rodri before swerving into the far corner.
It took City only six minutes to regain the lead. Phil Foden brilliantly rolled the ball over Victor Lindelof before De Gea parried his shot. Bernardo Silva’s follow-up shot was blocked before Alex Telles inadvertently shot the ball in De Bruyne’s path to score his second goal.
It was Mahrez’s turn to contribute to the goals of the second half at Al-Ittihad Stadium.
De Bruyne helped achieve his first goal, with a corner kick from the left, which Mahrez met with a stunning half-volley that passed through a slight deviation from Maguire in the 68th minute.
There was initially a temporary offside delay for United in the 90’s but then a VAR review allowed a Mahrez goal to be awarded.
Taking into account the two league matches between the two neighbors this season, City outperformed United 6-1.
