Barcelona continues to move up Spanish league, beats Elche

Madrid, March 6 (BNA): Barcelona showed the depth of its attack today, Sunday, as it resorted to goal-hungry substitutes to save its victory and maintain its momentum in the Spanish League.

Ferran Torres and Memphis Depay came off the bench to score in the second half, while Barcelona advanced to a 2-1 victory over Elche on Sunday to extend their lead in the standings.

The victory lifted Barcelona from fourth place to third place, two points behind Real Betis, who host Atletico Madrid later on Sunday.

The Catalan club could finish in the top three for the first time since the opening round, according to the Associated Press.

Moving to a higher level will be more difficult. Barcelona are 15 points behind Real Madrid, the league leaders, who beat Real Sociedad 4-1 on Saturday. Second-placed Sevilla, who were played 0-0 at Alaves on Friday, are seven points ahead of Barcelona.

Barcelona has a game in hand for both Madrid and Seville. The hosts opened the scoring just before the end of the first half after Pedri Gonzalez’s shot was inadvertently turned into a pass for Elche striker Fidel Chaves, who entered the area and fired a low shot into the far corner.

Barcelona equalized in the 60th minute with a goal from close range through Torres, who entered the place of Javi Baez in the first half. Ousmane Dembele, who is back on good terms with the club after refusing to leave in the winter transfer window, helped set up the goal with a cross from the right side.

Depay, who replaced Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, scored the winning goal by converting a penalty in the 84th minute after a video review for a handball.

Aubameyang has kept his goalless after scoring five goals in his last three matches.

Barcelona has won the last three matches in all competitions, scoring four goals each time. Xavi Hernandez’s side have not lost in eight consecutive games, since the Copa del Rey round of 16 against Athletic Bilbao in January.
