14 Arab countries submit draft Counter-Terrorism Strategy Executive Plan

Riyadh, Feb. 1 (BNA): Representatives of 14 Arab countries presented a draft executive plan for the Arab strategy to combat terrorism as drawn up by the Council of Arab Interior Ministers for study.

This came during the seventh meeting of the Arab Higher Committee to prepare the draft, which lasted for two days, and was hosted by the Naif Arab University for Security Sciences at its headquarters in Riyadh, according to the Saudi Press Agency (SPA).

The meeting, organized by the Arab Office for Combating Extremism and Terrorism (Riyadh) and the United Nations Office for Counter-Terrorism, was chaired by the representative of the Sultanate of Oman, Lieutenant Colonel Muhammad bin Salem Al-Shanfari, and was attended by delegations from Jordan. United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Algeria, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Iraq, Oman, Qatar, Kuwait, Egypt, Morocco, Mauritania, Yemen and a representative of the Gulf Cooperation Council.

The meeting aimed to review the components of the implementation plan, the means of its implementation, the accompanying programs and activities with international partners, and the mechanisms for measuring, following up and evaluating the plan.

Naif Arab University for Security Sciences Vice-Dean for External Relations Khaled Al-Harfash confirmed that terrorism tops the issues that the university is keen to address with well-studied scientific methods through its programs and scientific activities, given the threats of such crimes and their repercussions on international security and stability, indicating that the university has adopted a plan to implement the program Al-Alami for the interim plans to implement the Arab strategy to combat terrorism approved by the Council of Arab Interior Ministers at its fourteenth session.

Al-Harfash explained that the university, in partnership with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), recently opened a specialized center that aims to be a regional center of expertise in combating crime including terrorism, organized and cross-border crimes. He expressed his hope that the recommendations and decisions taken by the representatives of the Arab countries will achieve the goals and objectives of the Arab interior ministers, and contribute to strengthening the endeavors of Arab and international action in the field of combating terrorism.
