120 dead after Halloween crowd surge in Seoul

Seoul, Oct. 29 (BNA) At least 120 people were killed and 100 injured when they were crushed by a large crowd advancing on a narrow street during Halloween celebrations in the capital, Seoul, officials said.


Choi Seong-beom, chief of the Yongsan Fire Department in Seoul, said the death toll may rise and an unspecified number of injured are in critical condition following the stampede at Itaewon entertainment district on Saturday night.


He said 74 of the dead were sent to hospitals while the bodies of the remaining 46 who remained on the streets were taken to a nearby gym so workers could identify them.


Officials say people were crushed to death after a large crowd began advancing in a narrow alley near the Hamilton Hotel, a major party venue in Seoul, according to the Associated Press.


More than 800 emergency workers and police officers from all over the country, including all available personnel in Seoul, have been deployed to the streets to treat the wounded.
