With hospitalizations up, France weighs return to masks

Paris, July 1 (BUS): Tourism is booming again in France – and so is the COVID-19 coronavirus. French officials have “called for” or “recommended” people to return to the use of face masks, but have stopped short of renewing restrictions that might scare visitors or revive anti-government protests.

From travelers in Paris to tourists on the French Riviera, many people seem to welcome the government’s light touch, while some worry that protective measures will be required, according to the Associated Press.

Virus-related hospitalizations have risen rapidly in France over the past two weeks, with nearly 1,000 patients with COVID-19 hospitalized daily, according to government data.

Infections are also increasing across Europe and the United States, but France has an exceptionally high proportion of people in hospital, according to Our World in Data estimates.

French government spokeswoman Olivia Gregoire said there were no plans to reintroduce national regulations that limit or set conditions for indoor gathering and other activities.
