Manama, March 9 (BNA) Her Royal Highness Princess Sabeeka bint Ibrahim Al Khalifa, wife of His Majesty the King and President of the Supreme Council for Women, tops the list published by the Contemporary and Historic Women Leaders Initiative. Announced by the Delegation of the European Union to the United Nations and the Permanent Mission of Gabon, on the occasion of UNESCO’s launch of the International Women’s Day in Multilateralism.
Her Royal Highness Princess Sabeeka bint Ibrahim Al Khalifa was chosen from among a number of world leaders in multilateral action due to the leadership roles played by Her Highness in various development fields, and her remarkable efforts and contributions to the advancement of women at the national level. And work to create an encouraging and supportive ground for competencies, build qualitative experiences, and highlight them on regional and international platforms.
The initiative celebrates the great impact of the efforts of Her Royal Highness through her presidency of the Supreme Council for Women, which is to monitor the progress of Bahraini women, support their participation in public life through political action and decision-making, and enhance their contribution to public life. The national economy, providing the foundations for family stability and social security.
In addition to Her Royal Highness Princess Sabeeka bint Ibrahim Al Khalifa, the initiative has included a group of influential women leaders, such as Queen Marie Alexander (wife of the King of Romania), Mrs. Susanna Caputova (the first female president of Slovakia), Ms. – Rosa Otunbayeva (Former President of the Kyrgyz Republic), Ms. Kirsti Kaljulaid (Former President of Estonia), Ms. Mary Robinson (first President of Ireland), Dr. Vaira Vijk-Freiberga (first elected President of Latvia), Ms. Maria Lourdes Pintaselgo (first Prime Minister of Portugal) Ms. Simone Veil (the first woman elected as President of the European Parliament), Ms. Roberta Mezzola (the current President of the European Parliament from Malta), and Ms. Ursula von der Leyen (the President of the European Commission from Germany).
Last January, UNESCO inaugurated the International Day of Women in Multilateralism, based on a resolution put forward by Gabon, and adopted in November 2021 at the UNESCO General Conference; In supporting and appreciating the important and influential role of women in pluralism to promote peace, security, human rights and development.
During an exhibition yesterday in Geneva, Switzerland, which will run until March 10, 2022, the initiative was launched to highlight the role of contemporary and historical women leaders who have contributed to the advancement of pluralism, human rights (including women’s rights), development, peace and security – in general or implicit – through their work in leading and managing programs and initiatives that have had an impact at the local, regional and global levels. In addition, the exhibition showcases the contributions of young women activists who pursue these ideals in their countries, as well as women who lead the multilateral process through senior positions in the United Nations or other international organizations.
