Union Berlin finding own Bundesliga success hard to believe

BERLIN, Feb. 13 (BNA): Even players are finding it hard to believe Union Berlin’s stellar performance this season, the Associated Press reports.

Promoted for the first time in 2019, Al-Ittihad have already reached and exceeded their season target by 40 points to secure their survival and their place in the league for a fifth season. There are still 14 games to go.

Despite the modest resources, Union is only one point behind Bayern Munich, the 10-time champion, in second place, after winning every match since the beginning of the year.

It was the club’s fifth consecutive 2–1 league win over Leipzig, and ended the home side’s 18-game unbeaten streak in all competitions.

Leipzigwa were seen as genuine title contenders after winning the German Cup last year. But the loss to Union, a club owned by its 49,000 members, left Leipzig seven points behind Bayern.

It was the fourth match of the six this year that Al-Ittihad turned around to win after falling behind by a goal.

The federation made good use of the extended winter break in the Bundesliga. The team’s hitting schedule took its toll in November as he conceded 11 goals in three games without a win. Al-Ittihad previously had the best defense in the league, with only nine goals conceded in 12 matches.
