TRA Bahrain publishes its public consultation on BNETs wholesale broadband

Manama, October 29 (BNA): To ensure universal access to affordable broadband services, and the kingdom continues to have a high-level fiber infrastructure, the Bahrain Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) has published a public consultation on BNETs wholesale broadband service, for example Wholesale Data Stream Service (WBS), used by telecom operators to provide broadband services to home and business customers.

In accordance with the 2022-2023 action plan, the authority has prioritized the revision of the wholesale broadband service tariff so that everyone in the Kingdom can benefit from better service offerings as soon as possible. Based on the authority’s assessment, the proposed tariffs by BNET, the national provider of the fiber network, represent wholesale price reductions that the authority expects retail operators to pass on to end users. In addition, the authority welcomes BNET’s proposal to increase broadband speeds to enable everyone to have a quality online experience and support Bahrain’s digital development and global competitiveness.

The authority is committed to achieving its goal of promoting competition in the consumer broadband market. Accordingly, the authority is proposing amendments that give individuals and businesses greater power to choose the service that best meets their needs while allowing retail operators more flexibility in their commercial strategy.

The authority is now inviting stakeholders to comment on their views on the WBS definitions. After consultation, the authority will consider all incoming applications before reaching its decision on final WBS tariffs.

Commenting on this advisory, TRA Director General, Mr. Philip Marnick said: “We want to ensure that all customers in the Kingdom have access to world-class broadband services at good prices. Providing telecom operators with appropriate and fit-for-purpose wholesale products and services is a key regulatory mechanism that supports competition and consumer choice. BNET’s new offer increases broadband speed in the Kingdom and lowers prices. This will enhance competition in the retail market for the benefit of consumers and businesses. It will also enhance Bahrain’s global competitiveness.”
