Toyota retains its crown as world’s biggest car seller in 2021

Tokyo, Jan. 28 (BUS): Toyota sold 10.5 million vehicles in 2021, a 10.1 percent increase over its sales in 2020, which puts the Japanese automaker ahead of its closest rival Volkswagen.

Despite supply bottlenecks for semiconductors and other pandemic fallout, Toyota said Friday that global sales and production rose year-on-year.

This means that Toyota retains its title as the world’s largest auto seller. It knocked Volkswagen out of first place last year after the German car giant retained the crown for five consecutive years.

It also includes Toyota Motor Co., which specializes in small cars, Daihatsu and Hino Motors, a manufacturer of commercial vehicles.

Volkswagen suffered a 4.5 percent drop in sales to 8.88 million vehicles last year amid the chip crunch and other supplier problems.
