Tinubu sworn in as Nigeria’s president

Abuja, May 29 (BNA): Bola Tinubu became Nigeria’s president on Monday during a period of unprecedented challenges for Africa’s most populous country, leaving some citizens hoping for a better life and others doubting that his government will perform better than that of succeeded in it.

Thousands of Nigerians and several heads of government attended the swearing-in ceremony for 71-year-old Tinubu in the capital, Abuja. The Associated Press (AP) reports that he is succeeding President Muhammadu Buhari to lead a country that is expected to become by 2050 the third most populous country in the world, tied to the United States after India and China.

Tinubu, the former governor of Lagos, Nigeria’s economic hub, has promised to build on Buhari’s efforts to deliver democratic gains to citizens in a country where deadly security crises, widespread poverty and hunger have left many frustrated and angry. And with his election still being challenged in court by opposition parties and among many young Nigerians, Tinubu has also vowed to reunite the country.
