Spin and win: Verstappen rallies to eighth win of F1 season

Budapest, July 31 (BUS): Formula 1 champion Max Verstappen overcame one lap and his worst starting point of the season to win the Hungarian Grand Prix on Sunday.

His eighth win of the season pushed Verstappen’s 80-point lead over Charles Leclerc as F1 approaches its mid-season break, according to the AP.

Mercedes put both cars on the podium for the second race in a row. Seven-times F1 champion Lewis Hamilton worked his way up from seventh to second, with teammate George Russell finishing third.

Carlos Sainz Jr. finished fourth on another disastrous day for Ferrari. Leclerc finished sixth, one point behind Red Bull’s Sergio Perez.

Verstappen’s eighth win of the season was the 28th of the Dutchman’s career. He qualified for the 10th worst season due to a loss of power on Saturday, then in Sunday’s race Verstappen made a 360-degree spin.

Russell, starting from pole for the first time in his career, drove 30 laps until Leclerc overtook him from the outside as dark clouds rolled over the Hungary circuit and a light rain began to fall.

Ferrari’s strategy problems won’t go away. Leclerc saw two proven victories disappear – in the Monaco GP and British GP – after team calls dropped him from a dominant position to fourth.

After a month-long break, the season resumes with a hat-trick in Belgium, the Netherlands and Italy.
