Zurich, November 25 (BUS): Football lawmakers moved on Thursday to make the pandemic-era option permanent using five alternatives and dropped a proposal to allow the first half period to be extended to 25 minutes.
The International Football Association Board (IFAB) announced the updates to go to its annual decision-making meeting March 4-5 in Zurich, according to the Associated Press.
In May 2020, high-level competitions were given the option to allow teams to substitute five in a 90-minute game. This was intended to help manage players’ health and workload in the event of a pending match congestion when competitions resume after a near-global shutdown.
The temporary rule is currently available until 2022 and is now due to be written into the Football Laws.
The 25-minute pause was proposed by CONMEBOL, which wanted the option of presenting Super Bowl-style performances in the first half in major games such as the Cup Finals.
This was rejected by the International Football Association Board (IFAB), citing “the potential negative impact on the player’s well-being and safety resulting from a longer period of inactivity”.
The IFAB Committee is made up of the four British Football Associations and FIFA delegates. Their working meeting is held in November to set the agenda for the annual session.
