Six dead after bus plunges off bridge into river in Spain

Madrid, Dec. 25 (BNA): Six people died and two were injured after a passenger bus veered off a bridge and plunged into a flooding river in northwestern Spain, emergency services said on Sunday.

A police spokesman said two of the survivors – the 63-year-old driver of the car and a female passenger – were pulled from the river by firefighters with a rope and taken to nearby hospitals with varying degrees of injuries.

The spokesperson added that the search and rescue operation around the bridge is now over, while engineers have tried to find a way to safely recover the wreckage from the Lirez River.

Efforts to recover the bodies throughout the weekend were hampered by the river’s strong current and high flow caused by heavy rains in the Galicia region.

The Monbus bus was traveling between Lugo and Vigo on Saturday evening and stopped at a correctional center near the accident site.

It slid down a straight line on the bridge for reasons that are still unclear and plunged into the water in a fall of at least 40 metres.
