England beats Spain 2-1 to reach Euro 2022 semifinals

London, July 27 (BNA) Georgia Stanway scored the winning goal in overtime to seal England’s 2-1 victory over Spain on Wednesday and send her team to the semi-finals of the European Women’s Championship.

With the score 1-1 after 90 minutes, Spain left space for Stanway to hit a powerful shot from outside the penalty area that bypassed goalkeeper Sandra Banos’ outstretched hand.

After the first half with few clear chances, Esther Gonzalez gave Spain the lead in the 54th minute with a smart pass from Athena del Castillo, according to the Associated Press.

England coach Sarina Wegman’s tremor was rewarded in the 84th minute when two substitutes combined to tie the score, and Alicia Russo sent Ella Tone’s cross for a shot.

England will play either Sweden or Belgium on Tuesday in their sixth appearance in the semi-finals. England have never won a European title.

Spain, who had to play the tournament without Ballon d’Or winner Alexia Putillas, missed the chance to reach the semi-finals for the first time in 25 years.
