Newcastle, Oct. 18 (BNA): Harry Kane scored his first Premier League goal of the season when Tottenham Hotspur beat Newcastle United 3-2 at St James’ Park on Sunday to extend the hosts’ unbeaten run in a match that was briefly interrupted. After a fan collapsed into the crowd.
Driven by a thriving atmosphere in their first game since being taken over by a Saudi-led federation, Newcastle broke free from the traps and took the lead after just 108 seconds when Callum Wilson sent in a cross from Javi Manquillo.
But the brilliant start quickly faded as Tottenham responded in the 17th minute through Tanguy Ndombele, who hit the net from the edge of the penalty area after being played by Sergio Reguilon, Reuters reported.
Things got worse for the host five minutes later when Pierre-Emile Hogberg played a fine ball over the Newcastle defense and Kane overcame the offside trap to cleverly clear out Karl Darlow.
“We were beaten by the better team after a great start,” said Newcastle coach Steve. “Defensively, we had the same problems we’ve had for a while… We put our noses up but we didn’t defend well as a team.” Bruce, who took charge of his 1,000th game as manager.
Tottenham manager Nuno Espirito Santo told Sky: “We knew what was going to happen, with everything going on around Newcastle, in the end the performance was positive. We stayed in the match, and we kept it consistent. The moment we started moving them, we started making problems for them.”
Play was suspended for nearly 25 minutes just before halftime after a fan in the eastern grandstand collapsed from the ground. Newcastle said Almoayed’s condition had stabilized and they were on their way to hospital.
Son Heung-min added the third goal from close range in stoppage time in the first half before Newcastle reduced to 10 men in the 83rd minute when Jonjo Shelvey saw the red color for the second booking. Eric Dier scored a special own goal, but Spurs held out in the end.
“We needed the next score (in the second half) to give ourselves a chance but we didn’t have any constant pressure on them…but we’re still stuck and we’re with them,” Bruce added.
Tottenham moved to fifth place in the standings with 15 points from eight matches. Newcastle is second from the bottom with three points.
