BEIJING, June 2 (BNA) Traffic, pedestrians and joggers reappeared on the streets of Shanghai on Wednesday as China’s largest city began to return to normal amid the easing of a strict two-month coronavirus lockdown.
Full bus and subway service has been restored in Shanghai from Wednesday, with rail links to the rest of China, according to the Associated Press.
However, more than half a million people in the city of 25 million are still under lockdown or in designated control areas because cases of the virus are still being detected.
Negative PCR tests for coronavirus taken in the past 48 to 72 hours also remain standard in Shanghai, Beijing and other places for permission to enter public places.
Schools will partially reopen on a voluntary basis, and malls, supermarkets, convenience stores and drug stores will gradually reopen at no more than 75% of their total capacity. Cinemas and gyms will remain closed.
On Wednesday, health authorities reported only 15 new cases of COVID-19 in Shanghai, down from a record high of nearly 20,000 daily cases in April.
A few malls and markets have reopened, and some residents have been given permits that allow them to go outside for a few hours at a time.
