Schools closed, air travel disrupted as La Palma volcano belches ash

Madrid, November 2 (BUS): Flights around the Canary island of La Palma were disrupted on Monday thanks to the eruption of a local volcano that has disrupted daily business and destroyed property since September.

The airport operator, Aina, said on Tuesday that a wave of volcanic ash was to blame for the flight restrictions. Similarly, 22 schools had to close because sulfur dioxide concentrations exceeded safe levels in parts of the island.

The volcano has spewed lava since September 19, sometimes the flows reach 1300 ° C. More than 2,700 buildings were damaged and 975 hectares were covered with a thick layer of lava.

Since the outbreak, more than 7,000 residents have been moved to safety. It is impossible to say when the eruptions will stop.
