Saudis beat Vietnam 1-0 and close in on World Cup berth

Seoul, November 16 (BNA) Saudi Arabia beat Vietnam 1-0 in Hanoi today, Tuesday, to achieve its fifth victory in six World Cup qualifiers and advance in Group B in Asia from Australia and Japan.

In pursuit of their sixth World Cup participation, Saudi Arabia has a six-point lead over Australia and a seven-point lead over Japan, who were playing late on Tuesday against China and Oman respectively.

Vietnam remained in vain. Only the first two places in each group guarantee a place in Qatar in November 2022. The two winners meet the third place, and the winner meets a team from another league.

Saudi Arabia started strong and after 30 minutes Saleh al-Shehri’s header was shot from inside the area by Bi Tan Trong against Vietnam, but the ball was judged to have already crossed the line.

It seemed that Fahd Al-Mawlid expanded the visitors’ lead from close range 15 minutes before the end of the match, but the video assistant referee canceled it due to a mistake in the formation.

In the first group, the late Ali Mabkhout’s penalty kick led to the UAE’s 1-0 victory over Lebanon in Sidon, its first in the stage. That was enough to move the team that qualified for the World Cup for the first time and the only one in 1990 above Lebanon and third place.
