Samsung, BMW chiefs discuss ways to strengthen battery partnership

Seoul, Dec. 18 (BNA): The heads of Samsung Group, South Korea’s largest conglomerate and German automaker BMW Group, discussed ways to strengthen the battery business partnership, Samsung said Sunday.

The de facto leader of the Samsung Group, Lee Jae-yong, met with BMW Group CEO Oliver Zipse at the BMW Command Center in Incheon, west of Seoul, on Saturday for an enhanced partnership in the field of automotive batteries, according to Samsung Electronics Co.

Lee is also the CEO of South Korean technology giant Samsung Electronics.

At the command center, BMW held a handover ceremony of 10 all-electric i7 sedans equipped with Samsung SDI Prism Gen5 batteries to Samsung Group executives, according to South Korean news agency YONHAP.

The BMW CEO said Samsung is one of its important partners in its push for electrification and it is beneficial for Samsung executives to be with the BMW i7.

Samsung SDI has been supplying vehicle batteries for the BMW i3 hybrid, i8 plug-in hybrid Roadster, iX all-electric SUV, and i4 pure electric Gran Coupe models since 2013.
