Malaysia police questions campsite operator after landslide kills 24

Kuala Lumpur Dec 18 (BNA): Malaysian police have called in staff from an unauthorized camp site to help investigate a landslide that has destroyed camps and killed at least 24 people, as the search for missing persons continues for a third. Sunday.

The victims, who included seven children, died after a landslide hit the camp site early Friday while they were sleeping in tents in Batang Kali, a notoriously mountainous area about 50 kilometers (30 miles) north of the capital, Kuala Lumpur.

The Selangor State Fire and Rescue Department said 61 people who were caught in the landslide are still safe and nine are still missing.

Search and rescue teams have increased the number of diggers and rescue dogs to find campers who may be trapped under mud and debris, with heavy rain raising concern of more landslides.

Hulu Selangor Police Chief Sufyan Abdullah said the operator and two camp site workers at the father’s organic farm were questioned by police.

Authorities said the owners were allowed to operate organic farms, but did not apply for licenses to operate three campsites on the property.

The ranchers did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
