London, July 26 (BNA): Cristiano Ronaldo arrived at the Manchester United training ground with his agent on Tuesday with the future of the great Portuguese player at the English club.
Ronaldo has yet to start his pre-season training with United – he has missed the team’s tour of Thailand and Australia – and is set to hold talks with newly appointed manager Erik Ten Hag.
Ronaldo’s agent, Jorge Mendes, has been photographed in the car being driven by Ronaldo as he enters United’s Carrington training base, according to the Associated Press.
Britain’s Sky Sports News reported that Alex Ferguson, the former Manchester United manager who signed Ronaldo in the player’s first spell at the club from 2003 until 2009, arrived at Carrington earlier on Tuesday. Ferguson played an influential role in persuading Ronaldo to return to United last year.
The 37-year-old reportedly wants to play for another team just a year after returning at Old Trafford, with United not playing in the Champions League this season or competing with the best teams in England. United finished sixth in the league last season, 35 points behind first-placed Manchester City.
United said Ronaldo had not yet returned to training for “personal reasons”. Ten Hag has said time and time again that he is counting on Ronaldo to be part of the squad this season.
If United allow Ronaldo to join another club, that leaves the Hague ten fewer heart attackers in his squad and little more than a month left in the summer transfer window in Europe to bring in a replacement.
In Ronaldo’s absence, Anthony Martial was up front and impressed in the pre-season tour, scoring three goals in four matches.
Martial spent the second half of last season on loan at Sevilla last year, and scored one goal, so it could represent an unlikely second chance for the French striker.
Uruguay striker Edinson Cavani has been one of the players to leave United this season due to the expiration of his contract. United have been linked with the signing of Ajax striker Anthony.
