Rio de Janeiro Jan. 5 (BUS): The Rio de Janeiro festival in Brazil is held every year before Lent. Considered the largest carnival in the world, the Carnival Festival has been canceled for the second year in a row due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Mayor Eduardo Paes announced the decision on social media on Tuesday after a meeting with representatives of the carnival groups, German news agency dpa reported.
He said it was not feasible to hold a street carnival while maintaining entry restrictions and other coronavirus measures at the street celebration that hundreds of groups have registered to attend.
More than 3 million people took to the streets in four days for the latest Carnival festival of 2020, according to news outlet G1.
Meanwhile, plans for parades at the Sambodrome are scheduled to go ahead in February and March for the time being. Pace said infection controls are easier to implement at those events.
More than 22 million people in Brazil have been infected with the Corona virus, according to official figures.
