Regional center of excellence to be established in Bahrain

Manama, Jan. 31 (BNA): The International Swimming and Water Sports Federation (FINA) and the Bahrain Olympic Committee announced plans to establish a new center of excellence for water sports in the Kingdom of Bahrain, in partnership with GFH Financial Group and GFH Financial Company. The ceremony was attended by President of the International Swimming Federation Hussain Muslim, Zimbabwean Sports Minister Kirsty Lee Coventry-Seward, ministers, senior officials and world swimming champions.


The agreement was signed by the International Aquatics Federation, Executive Director Brent Nowicki, Secretary General of BBK Faris Mustafa Al-Kooheji, and CEO of GFH Financial Group Hisham Al Rayes.


The partnership will see the establishment of an international aquatics center at Bahrain University of Technology, which includes two Olympic-sized swimming pools and 150 rooms for players with all facilities.


The cooperation agreement also includes new swimming pools capable of hosting events in five out of six international water sports: swimming, water polo, artistic swimming, diving and high diving.


The center will be used for international tournaments annually, with a capacity of 1,800 people. It will also include a sports medical center under the supervision of technicians from the International Federation, and all coaches who will supervise training in the center will be appointed by the International Aquatics Federation.

His Highness Sheikh Khalid bin Hamad expressed his happiness with the agreement, which heralds the launch of one of the largest sports projects in the history of Bahrain.


“This project will transform Bahrain into a regional and international center for water sports and enhance sports tourism in the Kingdom,” he said, expressing his thanks to the President of the International Swimming Federation Hussain Muslim and GFH Financial Group Hisham Al Rayes.
