Rampant Bayern rout Bochum 7-0 to go top in Bundesliga

Berlin, Sept. 18 (BNA) – Defending champion Bayern Munich on Saturday crushed the promoted Bochum club 7-0 to top the German Bundesliga for the first time this season, at least for one day.

Joshua Kimmich with a double, Leroy Sane, Serge Gnabry, an own goal by Vasilius Lampropoulos, record-breaker Robert Lewandowski and substitute Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting secured the fourth consecutive victory and the sixth in a row in all competitions.

Bayern improved to 13 points, one point ahead of Wolfsburg, who play against Eintracht Frankfurt on Sunday, aiming to continue their perfect start to the league season.

Bochum slipped to second place after the worst defeat ever in the Bundesliga. Augsburg won its first victory in the season 1-0 at Borussia Monchengladbach, while Mainz’s match against Freiburg and Bielefeld against Hoffenheim ended 0-0, while Cologne’s match against Leipzig ended later on Saturday.

Leon Goretzka was in the Munich squad against his boyhood club a few days after signing his contract renewal until 2026, but goals were scored by others even though Sane got Bayern ahead with a free kick from 25 meters into the bottom right corner.

And the German winger, who was mocked by Bayern fans a few weeks ago and then put the second ball in 10 minutes later with a low cross to Kimmich who turned and scored with the help of a slight swerve.

Gnabry made it 3-0 in the 32nd minute and it was 4-0 at the break as Lampropoulos’ attempt to clear came into play.

Back in the day, 45 years ago, Bayern famously fought from 4-0 down to win 6-5 in Bochum, but the West Germans were unable to make a similar comeback in Munich.

Conversely, Sane’s cross in the minute was directed at Lewandowski for an easy entry, but Kimmich netted to make it a half-dozen five minutes later and substitute Chubu Moting finished things off with his third lucky run after Riemann saved his goal. The first two attempts.

Lewandowski became the first player to score in 13 consecutive home games in the Bundesliga, and also moved in one match from Gerd Muller’s record of scoring in 16 consecutive league games.

Hertha Berlin beat bottom line Guether Fuerth 2-1 on Friday, the other matches on Sunday are VfB Stuttgart against Bayer Leverkusen and Borussia Dortmund against Union Berlin.
