Premier League teams agree to 5 subs starting 2022-23

London, March 31 (BNA) Premier League teams will be able to use five substitutions per match starting next season in a change announced following the shareholder meeting on Thursday.

The switch to five teams – an increase from three – brings the Premier League in line with other major leagues in Europe, the Associated Press said.

The league has used five subs as a temporary measure when play resumes in 2020 after the league was suspended mid-season due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The changes were extended by the IFAB before a permanent decision was made in October to keep the option to use five alternatives.

But the Premier League decided not to use the recommendations of the International Football Association Board (IFAB) for the 2020-21 season and returned to three substitutions instead.
