Powerful 5.2 magnitude earthquake hits eastern Turkey

Istanbul, April 9 (BNA) A strong earthquake hit eastern Turkey on Saturday.

The Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) said the 5.2-magnitude earthquake hit the town of Buturg in Malatya province at 5:02 pm local time (1402 GMT).

The tremor was recorded at a depth of 6.7 kilometers (4.2 miles), according to the Associated Press today.

The Disaster and Emergency Management Authority said there were no immediate reports of injuries or serious damage.

Turkey lies on top of major fault lines and earthquakes are frequent.

A 6.7-magnitude earthquake struck the neighboring province of Elazig in January 2020, killing 41 people and injuring more than 1,600. In 1999, at least 17,000 people were killed in a powerful earthquake in northwestern Turkey.
