Everton lifts survival hope with win over lackluster Man Utd

London, April 9 (BUS): Everton clinched a huge win in their fight for survival and further damaged Manchester United’s faint hopes in the top four with a 1-0 win in the Premier League on Saturday.

Anthony Gordon’s shot from the edge of the penalty area smashed into the net off the leg of United defender Harry Maguire in the 27th minute at Goodison Park, according to the Associated Press.

It was another lackluster performance by United, who twice saved Jordan Pickford – both from the efforts of Marcus Rashford – early in the game and was frustrated by some aggressive and sometimes desperate defenses from Everton in the second half.

Whoever is named as interim manager Ralph Rangnick’s full-time replacement – Ajax’s Erik ten Hag appears to be the favorite for the job – is set to arrive at Old Trafford with United outside the Champions League and likely not take part in any European competition.

United remain three points behind the two teams in fourth and fifth – Tottenham and Arsenal respectively – and the two London clubs are playing a game in hand.

But things look more positive for Everton, who bounced back from a disappointing loss to relegated rival Burnley on Wednesday to move four points clear of the third-placed team as they look to avoid being knocked out of the Championship for the first time since then. 1954.

Everton’s form at home gives hope that the team can survive. Frank Lampard’s side have won five of their last seven games at Goodison Park in all competitions.
