Novak Djokovic withdraws from ATP Cup

Manama, December 29 (BNA) World number one Novak Djokovic will not participate in the upcoming ATP Cup in Sydney, raising speculation about his participation in the Australian Open in Melbourne.

The ATP Cup organizers announced on Wednesday that Djokovic has “withdrawn” from the team’s tournament that begins on Saturday, German news agency DPA reported.

No reason was given but Djokovic has never spoken about the status of his coronavirus vaccination, saying it is a private matter.

The Serbian was on the list for the Australian Open from Wednesday, but only vaccinated players are allowed to compete in the Melbourne Grand Prix.

If Djokovic plays the Australian Open which begins on January 17, he could also make some matches in the week of January 10 in Adelaide or Sydney events.

Djokovic is a nine-time Australian Open champion and has tied 20 Grand Slam titles with Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. Federer will not be in Melbourne due to the injury while Nadal may be doubtful after contracting the Corona virus recently.

Djokovic’s announcement was part of an update to the ATP Cup roster with France replacing Austria after former US Open champions Dominic Thiem and Dennis Novak withdrew.

Dusan Lajovic will replace Djokovic in place of Serbia, while Russia, led by world number two Daniil Medvedev, will seek to defend its title despite withdrawing three times, including Andrei Rublev, who tested positive for the Corona virus.
