New Zealand, July 25 (BNA): Goalkeeper Gael Talmann called Switzerland to a goalless draw against Norway on Tuesday in the Women’s World Cup, where the Norwegian played without star striker Ada Hegerberg due to injury.
Hegerberg was included as the starter, but the team announced during the match that the former Ballon d’Or winner was unable to play after she suffered a “groin feeling” at the end of the pre-match warm-up.
The Norwegians could have used it to open a scoreless match. In her place, Sophie Romanhough started the match as a striker. But Roman Haug’s debut in the Women’s World Cup proved fruitless. She was substituted in the 73rd minute for Karina Civic.
According to the Associated Press (AP), both Switzerland and Norway had their share of chances to score a crucial opening goal throughout the match, but it was Norway that forced Thalmann to make four saves.
Despite continuous rain for most of the match, 10,769 fans were in attendance for the Group One match at the 18,000-capacity Waikato Stadium.
Tallman made a number of key saves, but her strongest test came 15 minutes before regulation time.
Norwegian substitute Caroline Graham-Hansen fired a powerful shot from the top of the area, but Thalmann saved a low shot from a corner kick.
Switzerland lead Group A, and will compete with second-placed New Zealand in Dunedin. Needing a win, Norway will travel to Auckland to take on a Philippine squad after beating Football Ferns 1-0. Both matches will take place on Sunday.
