Heavy Rains in Afghanistan UnleashFlash Floods that Kill 12 People

Kabul, July 23 (BNA): Heavy floods triggered by monsoon rains in Afghanistan have killed at least 12 people and left dozens missing, according to local officials.

About 40 people are missing after flash floods late Saturday night in Jalriz district of Maidan Wardak province, west of Kabul, government spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said today.

He added that orders were issued to all concerned authorities to provide the necessary assistance to the people of the affected areas.

The provincial governor’s office said in a statement that hundreds of homes were damaged or destroyed and the missing are believed to be under the rubble of collapsed homes.

The statement also said hundreds of hectares of farmland had been swept away and destroyed, and the highway between the capital, Kabul, and the central province of Bamiyan, was closed due to the floods.
