Attack on Sikh temple in Afghan capital Kabul wounds 2 –officials

Kabul, June 18 (BNA) At least two people were injured in an attack on a Sikh temple in the Afghan capital, Kabul, on Saturday morning, officials said.

The temple official said, “There were about 30 people inside the temple. We don’t know how many of them are alive or how many are dead. The Taliban don’t let us in, we don’t know what to do,” Gurnam Singh told Reuters.

A Taliban interior ministry spokesman said two were wounded after assailants tried to drive a car laden with explosives into the area. He said the car exploded before it reached its target and the Taliban authorities are securing the site.

It was not immediately clear who was behind the explosion.

Local radio station Tolo broadcast footage showing thick gray fumes of smoke rising from the area.

Afghan Taliban rulers say they have provided security in the country since taking power in August, but international officials and analysts say the risk of renewed militancy remains. There have been multiple attacks in recent months, some of which have been claimed by the Islamic State militant group.

Sikhs are a small religious minority in Muslim-majority Afghanistan, and they consisted of about 300 family members before the country fell to the Taliban. Many left the country in the wake of the takeover, according to community members and media reports.
