US women’s team to receive courage award for equal pay fight

Washington, June 29 (BNA): The US women’s soccer team will receive the Arthur Ashe Award for Courage at the ESPYs next month in recognition of their fight for equal pay with their male counterparts.

The award, given to an individual or group in the world of sport who makes a difference outside the field of play, will be presented on July 12, before the women’s squad begins its bid to win a third consecutive World Cup title on July 22. Reuters reports.

In May 2022, women’s and men’s soccer teams in the United States reached historic collective bargaining agreements with the sport’s national governing body that will see players receive equal pay and prize money, including at World Cup finals.

The Arthur Ashe Courage Award is named after the late tennis star who grew up impoverished in the segregated South of the United States and was at the forefront of breaking down barriers for black tennis players.
