Newcastle, Leeds progress in League Cup, Man City v Chelsea in round three

Manchester, August 25 (BNA) Premier League clubs Newcastle United and Leeds United defeated the first division rivals to secure their place in the League Cup third round with their victory.

The third-round draw is between Newcastle and Crystal Palace as Leeds travel to Wolverhampton Wanderers, Reuters reported.

The big match in the next round is between Premier League champions Manchester City and last season’s League Cup runners-up Chelsea.

Newcastle had to fight back from a goal down to beat fourth-tier Tranmere Rovers (Second League) who took the lead through Elliot Nevitt in the 24th minute.

Jamal Lascelles brought Eddie Howe’s side up with a close-range shot before the second half and New Zealand striker Chris Wood looked at a brilliant corner kick from Kieran Trippier to win 2-1 in the 52nd minute.

Leeds also panicked before winning 3-1 over neighbors Yorkshire Barnsley.

Luis Sinistera put Leeds 20 meters away on their way before Mateusz Klich doubled from the penalty spot.

A diving header from Mads Andersen gave Barnsley hope and they could have equalized with a penalty but Callum Styles hit the post.

Cles made sure to win with an arc shot in the 56th minute.

Brighton and Hove Albion in the English Premier League qualified for a 3-0 victory over Forest Green Rovers to face Arsenal in the third round.

Championship (Second Division) Bristol City won 3-1 in the Wycombe Wanderers League.
