Salerno, December 18 (BNA): Dominant Inter Milan achieved their sixth successive victory in the Italian Serie A by defeating bottom-ranked Salernitana 5-0 in Salerno, continuing their lead at the top of the standings to four points.
The champions are on an unstoppable run in the league, winning their last five games without conceding and going ten games unbeaten.
“These games look simple on paper, but it’s not. The guys handled it well from the start. I’ve made some changes but you can’t tell, everyone is involved,” Inter International coach Simone Inzaghi told Sky Italia.
Ivan Perisic scored the first goal before Denzel Dumfries fired one second before the end of the first half, the first time in Inter’s history that Inter have scored 100 Serie A goals in a single calendar year, Reuters reported.
Alexis Sanchez hit the net in the third goal, before substitutes Lautaro Martinez and Roberto Galliardini completed the defeat, leaving the hosts at the bottom of the standings with eight points.
Inter leads with 43 points, four points behind Milan in second place, who will play with Napoli on Sunday evening.
“We must continue like this, we are on a great path and we will face Torino after that,” added Inzaghi.
It will be our ninth game in 25 games, and we have to give one last push.”
The mood of the fans at Stadio Arechi was in sharp contrast to that of their visitors, as fans hung protest banners after uncertainty over the club’s ownership status led to reports that they could be expelled from Serie A mid-season.
The events on the field gave them little encouragement.
Perisic headed in a corner kick and Dumfries fired a shot from the underside of the crossbar and inside, using goal-line technique, he showed he crossed the line after the ball bounced out.
Inter’s pressure was relentless and they missed many good opportunities to add to their squad.
The best goal of the night was the third, as they began a counterattack on the edge of their penalty area, which Sanchez eventually shot into the bottom corner after a series of passes.
Martinez and Gagliardini both benefited from breaking the ball in front of them in the area to finish in the last 15 minutes as Inzaghi’s side showed their unyielding side.
Earlier, the nightmare began for Andrei Shevchenko as the Genoa coach continued as he lost 3-1 to Lazio.
The Ukrainian got one point from his first six matches in the league, and his team is in 19th place with 10 points, while Lazio climbed to eighth place with 28 points.
