Amman, Dec. 12 (BNA): The Netherlands announced an additional allocation of 14 million euros to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Jordan to meet the critical basic needs of 31,400 vulnerable refugee families.
A statement from the Dutch embassy on Monday said that the additional funding comes in response to recent appeals by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the Jordanian government for additional support for refugees in Jordan.
She explained that the high cost of living has greatly affected the conditions of vulnerable groups in Jordan, with refugees being particularly affected.
“The Netherlands’ contribution of €14 million to UNHCR’s cash assistance program aims to alleviate the immediate needs of the most vulnerable refugees and will help them pay food, housing and energy bills,” Dutch Ambassador Harry Verwe was quoted as saying.
“This contribution is a sign of our continued commitment to support Jordan in hosting this large number of refugees.”
The representative of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Jordan, Dominique Bartsch, expressed his gratitude to the Netherlands for responding to their call to provide support to refugees during the winter period.
“It allows us to maintain our cash assistance to the most vulnerable women, men and children and stabilize their fragile family economies,” he said.
The Netherlands is among the five largest donors to UNHCR in terms of unearmarked funds which include UNHCR support in Jordan; The €14 million is in addition to UNHCR’s longstanding Dutch support.
In addition, this additional funding complements multi-year Dutch support in Jordan through the PROSPECTS Partnership.
PROSPECTS brings together the International Finance Corporation, the International Labor Organization, UNHCR, UNICEF and the World Bank to promote the self-reliance of refugees and vulnerable Jordanians by improving their access to and inclusion in quality education, employment and protection services, while supporting the Government of Jordan with their own services. development goals.
