Chisinau, Feb. 10 (BNA): Moldova’s president named businessman and former minister Doreen Resyan as the country’s prime minister after leaving a top cabinet post vacant Friday when Natalia Gavrilita unexpectedly resigned after 18 months into her crisis-ridden tenure.
President Maia Sandhu told a news conference that members of the ruling Labor and Solidarity party had approved her choice of Regen as the new prime minister.
“I know we need unity and a lot of work to get through the difficult period we are facing. The difficulties of 2022 postponed some of our plans, but did not stop us,” Sandu said, adding that she wants to focus in 2023 on revamping key areas such as Moldova’s economy and its justice sector.
The Associated Press reported that Regen, a 48-year-old economist who served as interior minister between 2012 and 2015, will have 15 days to form a new government to put it to parliament for a vote.
Resin said he would “immediately proceed” with forming a new government and that his main focus would be on introducing “order and discipline” into Moldova’s institutions, breathing new life into the economy and ensuring peace and stability.
After her resignation on Friday, Gavrietta, the 41-year-old economist who was appointed prime minister in August 2021, told a news conference that her government “could have moved forward faster” had she had the same support and confidence. locally as it has done from other European countries.
Gavrilita’s presidency was marked by a long series of problems. These include a severe energy crisis after Moscow dramatically cut supplies to Moldova and skyrocketed.

“We immediately faced energy extortion, and those who did hoped we would give in.”
Sandu thanked Gavrilita on Friday for her “tremendous sacrifice and efforts to lead the country in a time of so many crises”.
