FANR launches 2023-2026 strategy

Abu Dhabi, February 10 (BNA): The Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR) has launched its 2023-2026 strategy, “Our Vision, Our Promise” that outlines its commitment to maintaining its regulatory oversight in the nuclear and radiological energy sectors. Its support for the vision of the UAE government “We are the Emirates 2031”.

The vision of the Authority, to be recognized globally as a leading regulator, will be achieved by pursuing two strategic objectives: proactively improving regulatory oversight of facilities and activities; and promoting research, development and capacity building to meet potential emerging challenges in the nuclear and radiological energy sectors in the UAE.

Christer Victorson, Director General of the Authority, said: “The slogan of our strategy, ‘Our Vision, Our Promise’, reflects our commitment to advancing the priorities of the UAE government by ensuring that the Authority is a globally recognized supervisory body.”

Our vision is our promise to the leadership and people of the United Arab Emirates. We are proud that the United Arab Emirates is today a role model for new nuclear countries by building and operating the first Arab nuclear power plant. The authority is an integral part of the government and is committed to supporting the UAE vision and contributing to its goals.”

He added that the authority will work closely with other government agencies to achieve its mandate to provide the necessary regulatory framework by adopting a proactive and innovative work mechanism.

The authority said that in the next four years, the authority will direct its efforts to prepare for the future by focusing on the areas of nuclear safety, radiation safety, nuclear security and safeguards.

It will also focus on research and development, capacity building, implementation of advanced technologies in the nuclear sector, enhanced engagement with stakeholders, and enhanced collaboration with national and international stakeholders among other aspects.

The authority has developed a number of strategic projects to achieve its vision, including “improving the infrastructure for radiation protection” and “strengthening the capabilities of preparedness and response to nuclear and radiological emergencies” in addition to “establishing the organizational infrastructure for managing radioactive waste and spent fuel.”

FANR confirmed that the strategy is a road map to strengthen and expand regulatory oversight with the aim of protecting the public and the environment by regulating the nuclear and radiological energy sectors in the UAE.

Established in 2009, the Authority regulates all nuclear activities and licenses for the use of radioactive sources in the UAE.

This includes not only regulating the design, location, construction, commissioning and decommissioning of nuclear power plants in the country but also regulating radioactive materials and radiation sources.

The Authority controls nuclear safety and security, radiation protection and safeguards, and is committed to applying the global agreements concluded by the United Arab Emirates. Find out more at www.fanr.gov.ae.
