Japan emperor turns 62, calls for hope to overcome pandemic

Tokyo, Feb. 23 (BNA): Japan’s Emperor Naruhito, on the occasion of his 62nd birthday Wednesday, called on people to keep the “fire of hope” burning in their hearts and support each other to overcome the challenges posed by the coronavirus pandemic.

Naruhito said his heart aches when he thinks of people who have lost their jobs, struggled financially or felt isolated because of the pandemic, according to an Associated Press report.

“The difficult situation has continued, but I firmly believe that it is possible for us to overcome this dangerous truth with patience by caring for each other, sharing each other’s pain and making efforts to support each other,” Naruhito said in Palace News. The conference was held before his birthday.

His birthday greetings to the public in the palace have been canceled for the third year, and the palace ceremonies have also been curtailed due to the pandemic.
