General Meeting of Council of UNGA Presidents kicks off in Bahrain

Manama, Mar. 6 (BNA): The general meeting of the Council of Presidents of the United Nations General Assembly, chaired by the Kingdom of Bahrain, began here today, at the invitation of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa. By Dr. Han Seung Soo.

In his opening speech, Dr. Han Song Soo expressed his sincere thanks to the Kingdom of Bahrain for hosting the second session of the UNCPGA after its activation, noting that the council seeks to present the experiences of former presidents to the United Nations General Assembly with the aim of: promoting pluralism and achieving the highest goals of the United Nations Charter.

He expressed his hope that the meeting would contribute to providing the appropriate ground for launching constructive discussions and initiatives that would consolidate the principles of the United Nations and promote global peace and security, as well as provide a positive environment for sustainable and real development for all peoples. take place.

In her statement, the President of the sixty-first session of the United Nations General Assembly, Sheikha Haya bint Rashid Al Khalifa, praised the holding of the meeting in Bahrain at the invitation of His Majesty the King.

She pointed out that the Kingdom, since its accession to the United Nations in 1971, has spared no effort in promoting human rights, fighting poverty and protecting the local environment, stressing that today’s UNCPGA meeting confirms Bahrain’s pivotal and general role in promoting global peace and security.

Chapa Krusi, President of the current session of the UN General Assembly, praised the meeting, and thanked His Majesty King Hamad and the Government of Bahrain for hosting it.

In his video message, Kőrösi reviewed the challenges the world is currently going through at all levels, calling for more concerted efforts to overcome them, and to provide a real, genuine and sustainable environment for all peoples.

He expressed his hope that this meeting would be a new platform capable of promoting the values ​​and principles of the United Nations, and pushing them forward by benefiting from the accumulated experiences of the former presidents and their future vision.

The Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, also addressed the meeting. He expressed his thanks and appreciation to His Majesty the King for his invitation to hold the meeting in the Kingdom.

In his video message, the Secretary-General of the United Nations emphasized that the world is currently facing a wide range of challenges, including a rapidly changing digital world, where technology is transforming every aspect of our lives.

He stressed the need to ensure that technology does not create any kind of inequality, and highlighted the importance of reducing the risks that modern digital technologies can cause, especially false and misleading information and hate speech.

He also warned against the misuse of personal data that is used to “increase profits and manipulate behavior,” calling for “the development of new standards that improve electronic protection, prevent information penetration, and stop illegal surveillance.”

“That is why I proposed a global digital compact, to be agreed upon at the Future Summit next year — with input from the private sector, civil society, and others,” he said.

“We are also working with a wide range of actors to promote a code of conduct for information safety on digital platforms,” ​​he added.

After that, the participants discussed the main topics and issues on the agenda of the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly.

The two-day meeting discussed a number of major issues, including cybersecurity and combating cybercrime, based on the role of the Council as a permanent leadership forum for promoting pluralism and international cooperation, with the aim of consolidating the goals of the United Nations, foremost of which is international and national security.

It should be noted that the Council of Presidents of the United Nations General Assembly met at the United Nations Headquarters in New York on October 20, 2022. It decided to institutionalize its role in order to accelerate the implementation of the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. A way to meet multiple challenges.

UNCPGA members include former Presidents of the United Nations General Assembly, and it is currently chaired by the President of the 56th Session of the United Nations General Assembly and former South Korean Prime Minister, Dr. Han Seung-soo.
